Writing Center Guidelines in English
Our goal in the Writing Center is to provide students with one-to-one interaction with a tutor to help them with their writing. Some students might be brainstorming, some working on an introduction, some adding examples or fixing grammar, and some revising a final draft. In the center, students might ask, "Is this topic sentence ok?", "I have trouble with prepositions in this paper. Can you help me?", or "Is this concluding paragraph clear?" Many times the tutor will not immediately check the paper but ask you questions to get you to think about your own writing.


1. What type of help can I get at the Writing Center?

A. 15 minute appointments to talk about writing or English
B. Drop-in to ask questions
C. Sign-up ahead of time for an appointment

2. How long is an appointment?

Appointments are fifteen minutes; however, if no one has signed up for open times, you can continue talking with the instructor.

3. Can I talk to a writing center instructor about topics besides writing?

Yes. They can help you with most English questions you may have.

4. Who should come to the Writing Center?

A. Students who are good at English to improve their papers
B. Students who are having a lot of trouble writing
C. Students who have questions about English

5. What can I do to improve my grammar in my writing assignments?

The writing center has some handouts to help with grammar. Also, go to the WRITING RESOURCES section of the Writing Center Homepage for some websites.

6. I don’t have writing problems. I just can’t find good topics to write about. What can I do?

Go to the Writing Center. The instructors can help you brainstorm. Sometimes when you talk to someone about the topic or theme, many new ideas emerge.

7. When should I go to the Writing Center?

A. Before you start a paper to get ideas
B. With a draft to have the ideas, vocabulary and organization improved
C. If you come with a finished draft just before it is due, you can be helped, but it will be too late for big improvements
