Criterion is an on-line writing evaluation system that is made by the same company that makes TOEIC and TOEFL tests. It can help you improve your writing. If you use Criterion along with peer review, the writing center, and your instructor’s help, your writing should improve.

Log on

Go to http://criterion.ets.org
2.
Click "Go to Criterion Student Website"
3.
Click the "Log In" Button (only click this button to log in and NEVER click Register)

It will take you to the "Log In -- Student" Page
Type in YOUR User name and YOUR Password (wilmina email without @)
ex( id: ab123456. pw: same as id)

You will see your own home page with your name at the top.
There are two parts.
If you click on View your portfolio for this class, you will see essays that you have already started.
If you go to The Following assignments are available, then you will be starting an assignment for the first time.

In the page below you would click on "Special place", if this was your first time to write on this    topic.

For a new assignment, you will see this window.
It is has some important information such as:
         -To indent, use the spacebar and not the tab key
         -Have a line between each paragraph.

Click "Continue".

Then you will see this page and you can begin to type.
Note the assignment next to Home.
Instead of typing inside the box, you can also cut & paste your essay from a Word document.
This is better because it keeps the fonts and other styles.
Also, Spell Check is better in Word.
When you are ready to send it, click on "Submit This Essay".
If you want to work on your paper later, then click Save This Essay to Finish Later.

You should click "Save And Keep Writing" every once in a while in case the computer stops working. If you have pushed "Save and Keep Writing", then you paper will be saved until that point.

If you want to stop writing, but you do not want to submit your essay, then click "Save This Essay to Finish Later", Then you will see the next window when you use Criterion again.

When you click "Special Place ", you will see the following window.
-Continue where you left off means continue writing
-Restart This Assignment means to delete what you wrote before and start again
-Proceed to Home page means to go back to the homepage

Reviewing an essay
1.
After you click "Submit This Essay", the essay gets evaluated.
You will see the next window.

Performance Summary
You get Essay Score only if the essay was made by Criterion. At OJC many instructors make their own topics and you will see N/A.
You will also see how many possible errors in grammar, usage and mechanics.
Remember: Criterion makes mistakes, so you must THINK and decide if you have made a mistake or not. This is how you become a good writer.

If you click "View Score Analysis" , You get the window below .
In the window below, if you click "View Question", you can see the prompt or question for the assignment.
If you click "View Score of 6" on the right, then you can see what a 6 paper looks like and a 5,4,3,2, and 1.
When you finish this page, click "Close Report".

Also notice the keys at the top.
Home----tells you which part of Criterion you are in. To go back within Criterion , click in this area.

Here is feedback analysis on Grammar/Fragments.
When you roll over the highlighted section, you will see a comment like This sentence may be a fragment.

Click on "Style" at the top and you will see a feedback for Style/Repetition of words.
Here there may be too many It.

Click on "Organization & Development".
There is a button (not shown) that says Show All Elements. This is best to see all the parts of the essay.
Remember: This only shows if you have included the parts of an essay. It does not examine the content. You must examine the content yourself or ask a friend, or go to the Writing Center .

 【Portfolio】

Remember that your portfolio has all of the assignments you have started or completed for a specific class.
Click "View your portfolio for this class" to see assignment.

In the window below, it shows the assignments that have been submitted.
Look at Special Place. The first submission was on Jun 23, and the 6th submission was on Jun 29. You can only see the first submission and the most recent. In this case, you can not see 2, 3, 4 and 5.

If you want to revise an essay, you MUST click on Revise Essay.

Then you will see a window like below and you can revise in the window or cut and paste your revised assignment from a word document.
