Career of our Son Kiley
長男の就活は大成功でした！高校の頃に本学で英会話を学び、よく大学祭に来ていた石川海里アレン(Kiley Alan McCarty)は、いくつかのよい会社に内定を提供され、東京のNTTデータに入社する予定です。特に立命館大学のキャリアオフィスのグローバル人材養成プログラムにありがたいです。海里の専攻は情報理工学ですが、ＩＴと英語（などの外国語）は、確かに日本の会社にどんどん強く求められてきています。海里の留学（以下で詳しく書いてある）でも、人間として伸びました。
Our older son Kiley has received a job offer from the leading IT company in Japan, NTT Data in Tokyo. Some other top companies were also willing to hire him. It shows that Japanese companies are looking for people strong in IT and foreign languages like English. Chisato and I are grateful to the Global Human Resources Program of the Ritsumeikan University Career Office where Kiley and others (half foreign students) could practice project-based learning and make presentations to many companies. Since 2010 Kiley has studied abroad in the Philippines, Nepal (English teaching certificate), China (twice, for IT and Chinese), and he went to the Festival of Thinkers conference in the UAE. As parents, raising a child to become independent, it is just about mission accomplished.

ベネッセ・コーポレーション東京本社内にある非利益組織(NPO)チャイルド・リサーチ・ネット(CRN)からOJCの学生への「英文エッセイご寄稿のお願い」についてお知らせします。既にクラスで評価された論文でも、海外の人や日本のことを研究している人に参考になりそうでしたら、ウェブ上で掲載してくださいます。２００９年には、初めの学生論文、二人目、三人目、四・五人目（共著）のニュージーランド留学に関する論文、それから同僚が伝えた六人目の論文が掲載されています。２０１１年から、改めて本学の学生の論文を掲載するように募集しております。以下、学生への招待状や教員・講師への説明が続いています。学生達に招待状を見せてください。行政官・スタッフの皆様も、学生にすすめてください。

チャイルド・リサーチ・ネット(以下CRN)は、1996年にスタートしたインターネット上の子ども学研究所です。CRNのホームページを拠点に、子どもをめぐるさまざまな問題について広く世界の研究者や研究施設と意見や情報の交換を行うことで、その問題解決に寄与することを目指しています。その研究活動の一環として、青少年によるエッセイを紹介するYoung Researchers' Papersというコンテンツを展開しています。
この度、大阪女学院大学・短期大学のスティーブ・マッカーティ先生にご協力をいただきまして、皆様方に英文エッセイのご寄稿をお願いすることになりました。テーマは自由です。最近日本や世界で起きていることについて気になること、若い人たちの間で話題になっていること、日本のポップカルチャーの紹介、海外旅行をしてみて感じたことなど、自由なテーマでご自分の考えを表現してくださればと思います。長さも自由ですが、Ａ４紙で2枚から４枚程度にまとめて、そのWordファイルをスティーブ・マッカーティ先生にご提出ください。年間12本ぐらいの掲載を予定しておりますが、選出につきましては、マッカーティ先生がご担当くださいます。また、英語につきまして、多少手を加えた方がよいと先生が判断された場合には、先生が校正したうえで、CRNにお送りくださることになっていますので、英語につきましてあまり心配なさらずにテーマに集中してください。
掲載されました場合は、気持ばかりでございますが、1,000円の図書カードをお送りします。ご参考までに、下記のＵＲＬでいままでの作品をご覧ください。皆様のご応募をお待ちしております。どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

作 者 名：作品の冒頭にイニシャルで、作品の下に入れる御礼の言葉の中にローマ字表記でお入れします。ペンネームをお使いくださってもけっこうです。なお、作品をホームページへの掲載以外の目的でCRNが使用することは一切ございません。
このプロジェクトのきっかけは、1999年から、世界オンライン教育学会を通じてチャイルド・リサーチ・ネットと連携し、顧問となり、ベネッセ・コーポレーション東京本社のグローバル教育やバイリンガリズムに関する監修にもなりました。チャイルド・リサーチ・ネットのサイトで掲載してもらった最新の論文は、本学のそれぞれの英語コンテストを分析しました（下のリンクで読めます）。その結果、本学の学生の優秀さを認めてくださいました（下で引用されている英文の招待）。

We are impressed with your manuscript to know proactive efforts on English education at Osaka Jogakuin College. Most of the Japanese are not good at speaking English due to lack of both the language skill and courage & experiences. I feel sure that students at Osaka Jogakuin College will be active in various fields of the international community. [Your article on OJC student performances] will have a good influence on English education in Japan!

Take a look at the invitation from Child Research Net and let me know if you are interested in publishing an essay. It could be your research paper for a class at OJC, on a topic that people abroad would like to read about in English. When you finish, I can check your English. TEACHERS:
This is an offer exclusive to OJC, continuing in 2011. Besides a token gift, students can get an accomplishment for their CV (resume) and a connection to a leading Japanese educational corporation. At the same time, the excellence of the OJC curriculum and students gets publicized.
Student papers published online can serve as models for future classes such as Topic/Theme Studies. Five OJC student papers were published by Child Research Net in 2009. The first was originally an intermediate level Topic Studies I paper, then a winner of the presentation contest, and finally developed into the article "Bullying! - Causes and Possible Solutions." In March 2009 the second paper was published, "Facing the Global Crisis of Illegal Logging." In June the third paper was published, "Eliminating Violence against Women in Japan and around the World." The fourth published paper was co-authored by students and may reflect well on the OJC study abroad program: "Cross-Cultural Consciousness: Studying Abroad in New Zealand." A colleague passed on a manuscript from one of his students that was published in November 2009, the fifth article in this series: "Santa Claus in History, Myth, and Image."
As you come across student papers that are amazing and would be of interest to readers of English about Japan or distinctive Japanese perspectives, please get an electronic version from students, edited into roughly 4 pages single spaced, with graphics OK, and include their e-mail address to contact them about the gift and paperwork. You or the student could attach it to an e-mail message to: mccarty@mail.goo.ne.jp
