授業の目的または到達目標 To develop research paper writing skills and discussion skills in English. To study many human rights problems and the situation in Japan. To think of solutions, such as how to achieve equal rights for women, minorities and foreigners. 授業の概要 Students will read and discuss handouts in English related to human rights issues in Japan. Students will also learn more about writing a research paper in English. Students will research and write a paper related to the course theme. To be successful, students should prepare outside of class, think and speak in English, and students must write their own English for the research paper. 授業の形態 Brief lectures, readings for homework and group discussions, presentations, and a research paper. Once a week the class is conducted in a computer lab. 準備学習 Students should spend at least an hour for each class preparing for the next class by studying handouts, thinking about the discussion topics, and working on the research essay. Search the library, Internet - including the class home page - talk to the teacher or send e-mail (see link above). 教科書 No textbook. Print handouts (the homework is usually to study the handout, looking up vocabulary words, to prepare to discuss the article in the next class). 参考文献 Review the Pocket Guide to APA Style, 「英語作文を理解する説明」, and the Core Studies I textbook: Unit 3 for Human Rights (see links below) and Unit 4 for paper writing. advice. | ||||||||||||
成績評価方法・基準 Unified grading system for Topic Studies 1
|
Research Paper: A 5-page research paper in APA style plus a References page are necessary
for a passing grade. The research paper is completed in three stages: the
Outline and References with about five sources to be cited (due in class
9), the first draft (due in class 20), and the final draft (due in class
26). If the final draft is not finished on time, after the last class submit
it to the college office. There will be a late penalty of 10% through the
first day of semester exams and 20% until the last day of
make-up exams. After that day students cannot submit a paper and cannot
pass the course. |
Class Participation Policy
General aims * Constructive and balanced participation by all the students * A natural flow of discussion that leads to greater knowledge and English communication skills |
Specific guidelines and suggestions 1. Frequent turn-taking (英語の相槌も含む) helps make participation balanced. 2. Use follow-up questions and comments for deeper understanding of issues. 3. Maintain a fast pace during discussions, where fluency is more important than accuracy, provided that your meaning gets across. 4. Work hard, try to be enthusiastic, constructive, polite, and honest (両方の意味:真実を言う・正直). 5. Participation can be negative, so please be quiet and listen when the professor or others are speaking to the whole class or to a group. Using Japanese (私語) except to clarify meanings will be counted as a minus. 6. Show that you have prepared before class to discuss the issues. |
Attendance * Regarding the number of times you have attended, the right to take the final exam or to receive credits, please ask at the Educational Promotion Section, because the school policies will be followed. * Over 20 minutes not in class equals an absence. Lateness (or leaving early) bothers others in the class, and absences disappoint other discussion group members. |
